Erik Dilan on the issues

Fighting for Fairness and Stability

Assemblymember Erik Dilan is on the frontlines every day fighting to stop Donald Trump’s assault on New York, protect our immigrant neighbors from ICE, and deliver for North Brooklyn families. Whether it’s protecting tenants and working for more affordable housing, improving access to health care and our public schools, or delivering a justice system that prioritizes both fairness and safety, Erik is always there for us.

Nothing is more important to Erik than working to protect tenants and fighting to keep homes in North Brooklyn affordable. In the Assembly, Erik led the fight to pass the strongest rent laws in a generation. He brings proven leadership to the fight from his years chairing the Housing & Buildings Committee on the City Council where he forged consensus on legislation that shaped citywide housing policy. Erik remains committed to legislation that supports vulnerable people and that will bring more lower and middle income homes apartments to Brooklyn. And he’ll continue to fight to keep private equity investors out of the market for small homes and rentals.

As Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Corrections, Erik led the fight to pass the Correction Reform Law of 2025 to require more accountability and oversight in the operation of New York State prisons. He continues to focus on improving conditions and expanding support for reentry programs. Erik has championed some of the most important criminal justice reform legislation of the past two decades, including the Clean Slate Act, the Second Look Act and Earned Time Act. He’ll continue to fight for a justice system that recognizes fundamental fairness and public safety should be delivered together.

As a father of three, Erik has experienced firsthand the challenge of finding reliable and affordable childcare. That’s one reason is an enthusiastic supporter of Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul’s plan to bring universal, free childcare to children under the age of 5. He understands it’s both critical to giving parents flexibility to work and to giving our kids the headstart they need deserve in life. At every turn, he has worked to expand pre-K and 3-K throughout New York. And Erik has always fought to address needs here in North Brooklyn which is why he’s working hard with City Hall to re-open the recently shuttered Audrey Johnson and John Coker Day Care centers.

Over the past year, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican enablers have done everything they can to undermine the delivery of health care—from drastic cuts to Medicaid to eliminating Affordable Care Act subsidies to undermining vaccines. Erik Dilan will continue to do everything he can to fight back. Whether it’s defending safety-net and public hospitals, supporting nurses and frontline workers by fixing dangerous staffing shortages, or closing insurance coverage gaps for young people, immigrants and freelancers, Erik is leading the charge. He’s proud to have supported the state’s billion-dollar investment in expanding mental health care throughout the state. And he’ll continue working to expand access to health care, especially here in North Brooklyn.

Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress have turned ICE into a paramilitary secret police force. Erik Dilan believes it must be abolished. Until it is, he will continue to do everything he can in the state legislature to protect immigrants in New York and defend their rights. That’s why he’s fighting for legislation to let residents sue ICE agents in court for violations of their civil rights. And why he’s supporting new legislation that would keep ICE agents away from sensitive locations—our churches, schools and hospitals. Too many immigrants in New York, and all across the country, live in fear today as they go about their daily lives. Erik will not stop fighting back until that changes.
